Our passionate bakers want nothing more than to add a delightful sourdough creation to your table.
Our story begins with a family gathering at Thanksgiving time.
Every holiday or special occasion, Cousin Camilo would bring the gift of bread to the party.
One year in particular, the flavor and texture were noticeably remarkable. It was a massive loaf of some sort of brown bread at least 7 inches tall and 9 inches wide. It was very moist and irresistible.
(I secretly stowed a giant chunk in a zip-lock so we could eat it later)
At one point I found myself chomping gloriously on a piece with butter, and there was Camilo sitting in a chair on the patio. I decided to inquire about his contribution.
"What kind of bread is it, Camilo?"
"No knead" he replied.
"Hmm no need wheat or artisan or ...?
"Just no knead, no need."
"Do you sell it?"
"No. No need."
That's all he said, three times. Hmm, no knead or need or well ...
I NEED!
We are heading home and now I'm in a quandary. I am preoccupied by this extraordinary bread! I don't really feel like I can ask for his recipe. I can't ask him to make it and ship it to me. I live 3 hours away by car. Hmmm, seems I am going to have to wait until the next family gathering before I can get my hands on this tasty bit of old world perfection. I don't even really eat bread. This is terrible! I'm hooked. I kept tasting it and so did Dave as we drove from Phoenix to Bisbee, Arizona. Great, now we must figure out how to make this bread. We were compelled.
About a week later, on a hike in the hills of Bisbee, with a local artist friend of mine, I told her the story of the bread.
"Are you a baker?" She asked
"No, I don't even believe in purchasing flour - well until now."
A week later, she handed me a "gift" and a "challenge."
A sourdough starter.
Ugh.
"You have to feed it she said." and handed me an instructional brochure.
What? I don't even have pets. "Feed it?"
"Thank you kindly, Marie, but this way above my pay grade."
I promptly handed the Tupperware, with some sort of beige goop inside, to my love, Dave.
"This is a job for you Dave. Here you go, and thanks again Marie."
Dave, started to learn about sourdough. He made it look easy, dealing with this little blob. Then low and behold, he made the first loaf. I took his picture. I was quite impressed. We told Marie! After he conquered that starter, I decided to try. Maybe I can at least try.
Nowadays, I am the baker in the family and Dave is the quality checker.
Turns out it is a contagious craft. Soon Auntie Jackie joined in the fun, and then Rebecca (mom). Ever since we launched, we have been driving our partners a wee bit crazy with all the flour, fun, messes in the kitchen and talk of bread, bread, bread and more bread!
I guess you could say we discovered that we could do a thing
And, we did and we are.
We have since shared the warmth with others.
Hearts have been lifted, eyes brightened and taste buds tickled!
We too have been asked, "Can I buy some?"
"Sure as sourdough, you can!"
DB&B's products are all natural, preservative free and chock full of that sourdough flavor that we all long for.
We invite you to experience our sourdough creations.
One bite may transform the way you think and feel about bread.
